No this is not what I meant. Do start X and try to use xvideo. The
xdriver is build so that you can use xvideo instead of the plain
framebuffer.

Anything that uses the framebuffer direct will be horribly slow. So,
startx with no mythfrontend and run mplayer with switch -vo xv or -vo
x11.
