Hi,
first of all, you can't use xawtv to watch tv, because it doesn't
support mpeg streams. The new xawtv4 was supposed to do so but
development has stopped a while ago.
Try to do the following:
Tune a station with ivtv-tune. E.g.
[ivtv-tune --device=/dev/video0 --channel=25]
Contact your cable provider, to get a list on which channel is a station.
Then we do
[cat /dev/video0 > test.mpeg]
This will save the video stream in the file test.mpeg in your users home
directory.
Wait some seconds and than open the file with a video-player.
You could give TV-Viewer a try. It's a small gui for ivtv and pvrusb2
cards but could also work with a cx18 based adapter.

Good luck
